Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield
5.0
A blend between Jeff VandeMeer’s eerie exploration of nature and Becky Chambers’ quiet self-reflection in the face of the unknown, Our Wives Under the Sea unfolds through alternating perspectives of married couple Leah and Miri. Miri’s POV focuses mainly on the events of the present, marked by Leah‘s unexpected return from a six-month deep sea exploration. Leah’s, in contrast, delves into the events aboard the submarine, while also bringing some insight into their relationship through reminisces. I love how the book explores themes of miscommunication and grief within a narrative that is equal parts ordinary and fantastical. The conclusion was probably the most heart-wrenching I’ve read in a while.
