I Believe in a Thing Called Love by Maurene Goo
4.0
okay this book annoyed me in ways more than one but I still laughed like a million times and I actually finished my weekly book on Tuesday not Sunday night so yes let's get into the thoughts
plot
-this book follows a girl named Desi who is a Korean American girl. She's valedictorian, striving for Stanford and decides to use the plots of Korean dramas to get her crush, Luca. This book is filled with comedic lines and really leads Desi to let loose and not control everything
characters
-desi. okay she was high key PSYCHO. like I liked her but also liked I hated her. so this book starts off with her liking this freshmen boy and I almost screamed bc senior liking a freshmen is a little strange but I was going to roll with it. this freshie max seemed nice but all desi did was cough on him and mucus landed on his shirt and I laughed out loud. at that moment, i knew desi was going to be a joy. she was legit the funniest person to read from bc then she starts explaining all of her relationship fails and I think everyone can relate to that occurring. her "flailure" a perfect combination of flirt+ failure. her first impression of luca was when he walked into her English class and she was talking to him and her pants fell to the ground and I lost it. it was only chapter three and i was already feeling some type of way. I liked how intelligent she was and she would have these moments with luca where she would just say a fact and he would be in shock she knew it but eventually got used to her knowledge.
-one of my favorite scenes was at the party where desi brought wes as her date to intimidate luca and she was being CRAZY as per usual and said to luca "Let me guess, Luca, you love the janga.." as the scene goes on, luca is confused but then just starts laughing because she called weed janga when the correct pronunciation was ganja but wes and Fiona had purposely not informed her on the correct way to say it and I just lost it.
-the parts where I thought desi showed how CRAZY she was the scene where she made luca get in a car accident to spend time with her like really booo just ask for coffee, you don't have to make his car get a FLAT TIRE. like someone could have gotten hurt all because your selfish self only cares about the boy. the whole detailed list of how she was going to woo over luca was crazy as well and just how attached she was to the list was insane. I didn't like how she wanted to control everything and it was just so toxic ugh. obviously that was the whole theme of the book was to let loose but i could have gotten that message without the crazy.
-luca. he was great. he's not a love interest i'll particularly remember bc he was the cliche beanie artsy guy that is mysterious. ugh. i liked how he was genuinely a sweet person and i felt bad he had such odd luck with girls. when he got mad at desi for the list i understood where he was coming from bc i couldn't' imagine having someone plan out how they were going to get with you like that's crazy. luca was just like every other angsty love interest so like he didn't annoy me but he was plain.
lines/plots
-"I like lots of eggs but desi she gets stomach problems if too many," my dad said helpfully... Luca smiled. "Learned the hard way?" My dad guffawed and nodded his head vigorously. "Exactly right!"
"So what are your intentions with our darling Desi?" I started choking on nothing and Luca took my hand, very casually, very coolly, and said "Being forever life partners."
why this book got a four
-alright the whole idea of desi throwing away Stanford for a boy is mind-boggling maybe because i would never do that and i don't think anyone that has worked that hard would do that. i was so confused at this and i don't really like the message it portrays but i guess books have to have a drastic plot device.
-the aspects of college were a little odd to me because she was applying regular decision to Stanford bc there would be less applicants so higher acceptance rate but i have always heard there is less applicants in early action/ early decision bc after the first semester, grades are higher so you can get in and the fact that she downgraded from Stanford to boston university kind of bothered me bc why didn't she choose cornell like she was still far away from luca so i was just confused at that.
-again desi was CRAZY so that made her a little hard to read about at times because she was so in love with the idea of being in love which made me want to throw bricks.
-luca was boring so
this book was fun and i'm happy i read it!
