Circe by Madeline Miller
4.25
I loved reading this book and had so much fun doing so. I was never interested in Greek mythology and my expectations of this book were low, but was looking for a book to bring on holiday with me, and this seemed to be on theme. I read this mainly while on the beach in Greek owned Cyprus. The world building and atmosphere created in this book is just beautiful. I loved the descriptive writing style. When it talked of stone floors, I was experiencing them myself. When it talked of the sea, I was right next to it, reading more. I didn't want to put this book down.
Some parts of the book felt a little too cliche, or there were parts that didn't feel as believable to me, and in those instances I was reminded that I was reading a book written by an author, rather than being lost in the world. Also, I struggled with the pacing a little in this. There were times that I wasn't that interested in what was happening and just wanted to get onto the parts that would interest me more. The book tells the story of Circe's whole life. Halfway through I felt it was going a bit slow. And then, at the end, she seemed to just be old all of a sudden and a lot of her life passed by.
I suppose I wish it had ended differently too. There were things I wanted to know and things I wished the author touched on, which were never mentioned. And the ending, although strange, was a little bit of a cliche for me too.
Overall though I had so much fun reading this, and I'm excited not only to read the authors other works, but to also read more about Greek mythology and retellings.
