The Godfather by Mario Puzo

5.0

(Having read this book 10 years ago, I wouldn't be surprised if my memory of it is incomplete or inaccurate.)

At age 14, I was a major tomboy, and like most boys my age, was obsessed with the mafia/other masculine images in our society. Yet, I was solidly in the nerd category, so of course I read this book before watching the movie. I had to do that. Duh. (At the time, I felt this vehemently.) This book appealed to me then, as it does now, because I have always had a sense of adventure and adrenaline has always propelled me through life. I get a kick out of scuffling and arguing and participating in pissing contests as much as the next guy--and I'm not going to lie about it. This book is macho. It's well written and captivating, which sometimes I associate more with female writers, but gosh do you have to be in the "masculine" mood to enjoy it. And, at the time, I was. Now, it comes and goes, but the book will always be a favourite.
