Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier
3.0

I struggled with this one a lot in the beginning and almost DNF-ed it. The premise of it sounded so intriguing and yet I was almost bored in the first few chapters. I pushed through and found Mary kind of irritating and making all sorts of bad, stupid decisions. I continued to push through and was rewarded with a good last 40 percent of the book. Du Maurier's writing is great and atmospheric, but here it just didn't work as well for me as it has in her other books and short stories I've read. I also HATED Jem and didn't see the appeal to him at all. Maybe I would've liked him better when I was younger but now I just shake my head at him and the things he would say to Mary.
