Read Between the Lines
by Rachel Lacey
I did not like this book. It pains me to say this as usually I like every lesbian romance but this was not my cup of tea. I have never hoped for the main characters to NOT end up together at the end until this book. One of the main characters (Rosie) is deeply unlikeable. She annoyed me from the first few chapters and I thought maybe she would get better but she never did. She consistently blamed Jane for all her problems with her business closing when none of it was truly Jane’s fault. Jane happened to be born into a family whose family business was property development. And her family’s company owned the building Rosie’s bookstore was in, and were planning on demolishing it. Somehow since Jane works there she was the one that ended Rosie’s lease, took her store from her, and was responsible for demolishing the building. Make it make sense? And Jane was apologetic for her company’s actions but there wasn’t anything she could do about it. She still tried to help Rosie find a new place for her bookstore, all while Rosie consistently resented her for her job. And Jane always insisted she was the guilty one who needed to apologize? I did not understand why these people were together and still don’t because it seemed to me like Rosie would not ever get over herself and was constantly punishing Jane for non existent issues. I almost stopped reading this multiple times, but I was holding out hope that the characters would get better and then never did. I grew very annoyed and tired of the same things being said and done every other chapter. Rosie came off as immature and annoying, and while I was rooting for Jane to not go back to her because she deserved better, she was mostly boring also. This was just a huge miss for me.
