The Assassin and the Pirate Lord by Sarah J. Maas

3.0

The catalyst events that led to Caelina's predicament in the first book of the Throne of Glass series are beginning to be explained in this first novella in the series. I found the pacing of this novella to be a major drawback, as I felt that it was just so slow. However, once the action started unfolding in the final few chapters, it became captivating and made up for the slow beginning. I do, however, sincerely hope that the remaining novellas will be a little better. To be honest, I didn't really connect with Cealena; I thought she was haughty and uninteresting. However, I did rather enjoy Sam's character.

“He couldn't be dead. not from the dagger, or those dozen pirates, or from the catapult. No, Sam couldn't be so stupid that he'd get himself killed. She'd... she'd... Well, she'd kill him if he was dead.”
