Shade's First Rule
by A.F. Kay
Rounded up rating.
This has the potential to become a really good series. I liked the pacing, and I liked the system. Minus points for cliffhanger ending (something the author apologizes for).
My issue is mostly with the MC, I don't quite like him. He's kind of stupid, despite having an above-average intelligent stat of 15. And before his fateful day of ascending, looked down on Worker classes and ignored other classes. He was so focused on becoming a mage that he was dismissive of everything else. He didn't even learn unarmed combat skills which he could before unlocking his class.
I found I kind of detest that kind of mindset, tho it's probably more realistic than all these training-crazy MCs we find in other progression fantasy books. I also realize he's already changing, and growing, which.. is the point of growing up I suppose. He's young, and his actions and thoughts reflect that.
He's also rather immature, and really insecure. He keeps instantly thinking he's being mocked or looked down upon over innocent statements just to repeatedly go "oh he's genuine" and never changing his reaction to that persons statements.
If the MC continues to grow, this will be a great story.
