Insurgent by Veronica Roth
5.0
4.5 stars. This book follows the typical YA-dystopian-2nd-in-the-trilogy formula: our heroine, having participated at the end of the 1st book in the destruction of/rebellion against the oppressive government that controls the society, now becomes a member of the army that continues to fight and set up a new world order (which is just as obviously doomed as the first). She argues with the love interest about the choices she makes. Etc., etc.
It may follow the formula but I still loved it. Insurgent kept up the intensity that I relished in Divergent. The author did a nice job expanding the world and showing us the culture of the other factions that we didn't see in Divergent. I like that she actually seems to be coming to an explanation of why their society had the odd structure it did. Much of the personal conflict could be avoided if Beatrice and Tobias would just TALK to each other, but this is par for the course for TV shows, YA books, and teenagers in general. I'm just glad I didn't see as precipitous a drop in quality as some other series' 2nd books have suffered. Can't wait for book 3.
