I like picking up books without knowing anything about them, but sometimes that doesn't work in my favor. Like picking up this book, expecting fantasy and getting basically nothing fantastical for quite a while, and then it turns out to be urban/paranormal fantasy. Just not my thing. Plus I got confused several times (between the author's obliquity and my confusion about the ages of the characters involved, I didn't pick up that a certain scene was meant to be a depiction of abuse and so some of the following reactions didn't make sense) and wasn't a fan of the audiobook narrator, so decided to quit at 15%.
