The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

5.0

Wow. Wow. Wow. Poignant. Stunning. Thought Provoking. Intriguing. Soul turning. Raw. Real Life.

This was an incredible book. And I honestly feel that everyone in America should read it.

I'm not going to get into the plot because you can read the synopsis for that. Just know that it doesn't do it justice.

For now, I'm gonna use my review as a moment to speak up on some things I've read in other people's reviews. Now, we are all entitled to read and review books as our heart's desire. So, my next few bits aren't saying you can't do that.

Let's carry on then...

#1-There are reviewers commenting that they felt the "dialect" was so poorly written. But it's just that, dialect. It is the manner in which someone speaks. Just as this dialect might confuse you, your's could confuse someone else. But to expect that the author should sway from the genuine language these characters would have in real life is inconsiderate. It wouldn't be the true idiosyncrasies of them if she did.

#2- Claiming that you don't find the characters actions to be "realistic" is ignorant. Just because it's not YOUR experience doesn't make it any less valid. If you can't understand why these black characters would think and feel the way they do given what happens to them day in and day out then you need to check your privilege.

#3- Claiming that THUG is "cop hating". Y'all gotta be playin' with these comments, right? If you as a community, as a people, were systematically oppressed AT EVERY LEVEL and then slaughtered in the streets by the very same ppl "sworn to protect" you, would you be claiming that this is cop hating? Again, check your privilege.

#4- Reviewing and claiming that this is not an accurate representation of what is happening. I'll circle back to some of my previous comments.
