Highly Sensitive People in an Insensitive World: How to Create a Happy Life by Ilse Sand
5.0
Reassuring
This book is a wonderful guide: from aiding you in the process of dealing with anger, bitter resentments, grief. With this book, Ilse Sand guides you through expressing powerful feelings such as guilt, shame, fear, anxiety in a more effective way. He also encourages you to try different, more useful, approaches whilst giving you an understanding of what behaviours tend to be detrimental to your own mental health. He encourages readers to feel empathy and crucially show compassion in situations when we typically say all the wrong things. Ultimately, this book serves as a way of getting to the root of why you behave as you do, looking into the early attachments you made as an infant to uncover and explore ways of moving forward and accepting oneself.
One of the key things I appreciated about this book is that even though I am not a highly sensitive person, there's quite a bit of myself I saw (as self-absorbed as this sounds). Sometimes all it takes is a book which explains bits of your character, or the characteristics of people you know, to comfort you and reassure you that you aren't alone. There are others just like you. Often, just to spare a moment to internalise and think deeply about who you are (inwardly and outwardly) is enough to help you identify those behaviours which trigger intense and severely damaging reactions in other people. For me, it was definitely a useful tool in teaching me key behaviours I can put into practice to maintain the important relationships I have with my loved ones.
I would take a read of this book, even if you aren't looking to read a book 'to help' you develop strong relations with others, because this book, can just as easily lead you on the path to self discovery. Or just as a means of identifying ways to better yourself, which will ultimately bring you better relationships of course- but I'd say, more importantly help you, develop your self confidence.
For me, this book had another benefit: as a Psychology student, this book was handy and in my time reading it I can see its use as a part of my studies. In Psychology, you tend to explore human behaviour in general terms 'murderers', 'psychopaths/sociopaths,' 'mental health victims' and then, the huge population who do not fit into either group. So, I felt this book offered a glimpse into another group of individuals. And, it is always good to be aware and educate yourself about the world, and all that is in it, so I readily recommend you give it a read.
I received this book through NetGalley.
