Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

3.0

Fangirl is a very sweet story that comes from such an authentic heart-warming place. I can feel the love Rowell has for her characters in this story.
I loved the way Rowell intertwined Cath's (MC) fanfiction with the "real text," as narrative device. Also super kudos for Rowell basically writing a HP fanfiction, just to then have a new character write fanfiction about that story in this book. Cath the main character feels so real, and I was very much rooting for her the entire time even when she was being a stick in the mud. lol. All of Rowell's characters feel lovely and full.
Despite all my positive notes I still feel the story as a whole was just 3/5. The stakes always felt minor, and most conflict points resolved easily, generally within a few chapters. I also think the parts where Cath read from her fanfixx account were a little long at times. The story of the hare was a nice reflection of how the characters were feeling at the time, but I think it all could have been edited down.
All that being said, I still enjoyed it as a whole. The story was very sweet and easy to read through. This is what I expect from Rowell anyway. I read Pumpkinheads last year and it also is a sweet YA romance.

I think I will skip reading Carry On now that it is out as a real novel, but I do love that she published it.
I am putting Eleanor and Park on my TBR since Rowell description in the Introduction. (Wednesday Press (c) 2018) "I'd just written Eleanor & Park, a book I knew would end tragically from the first page." Make me cry Rowell, I'm ready for it.
