Devil by Joel Abernathy

5.0

Devil, the second title in Joel Abernathy’s DiFiore Mafia Family series, was just as wild a ride as Ghost. Malcolm is such an interesting character - devious and calculating, dark but with a soft side that eventually makes an appearance. Valentine is a contradiction. He’s all book smarts with little common sense and so no one treats him like an adult, which causes him endless frustration. I found him an endearing character. Very smart, sassy, and a bit of a trouble maker because everyone keeps him in the dark.

Valentine is the baby of the DiFiore mafia family and he works in the ER. One night, a friend from his past entrusts him with something very important on his deathbed. Bringing the information to his family, he learns he now has a target on his back. After realizing how very real that target is when the ER is attacked, his calculating brother-in-law Silas decides he must go into hiding. Malcolm is the perfect candidate to keep him safe, but with his past and particular appetites he may be just as dangerous to Valentine. But when sparks fly between them, will straight Valentine stay safe from Malcolm?

The plot with this one was a bit fast moving. It had more plot events than Ghost and the steam happened later in the story, which honestly worked better for me. And this love story is a bit darker than Ghost, with BDSM playing a major role in their dynamic and love story. This is not a story for the faint of heart. However, if you like a story that is dark and you think vanilla is just a flavoring for sweet treats, then definitely give this series a look.
