My knowledge of Peter Pan stems from (perhaps sadly) the animated Disney movie, but to be truthful I think for the most part Disney took the best elements out of the book and incorporated it into 1953's "Peter Pan". Some of the elements that were left out of the Disney film made their way into the 1991 movie "Hook", so much of the source material is represented in those two movies. There are some elements in the book (and various movie versions) that don't hold up well, in particular the depiction of Native Americans. A classic story, but I found the book an average read, which is not terribly surprising - the book was based on the play written by Barrie in 1904 (he later made it a novelization in 1911). I think the storyline lends itself better to a play or movie.
