A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine
4.0

3.75/5 stars

The beginning of the story was a little slow, so it took some time for me to devote my entire attention to the plot - but once the politics of Texicalaan started to reveal the secrets, I found myself unable to put the book down. I tend to love Sci-fi novels, particularly stories that reveal a massive universe, but many times they only skim the surface of possibilities within such a impressive empire - so this novel, while obviously sci-fi, is also a novel about politics, and I loved it. It doesn't rely on the fact that its a space novel but instead a political novel, about the ramifications of such an expansive empire and how there are those who are unhappy with said rule - but these are just the basics of the novel and there is so much that goes on.

What brings this novel not quite to a four stars is, at least for me, the beginning with the deep explanations of the language. I love how the author devoted so much time to the creation of the language and subsequent grammar lessons, but I found them...boring. This is a me issue though, not one that I think most people will find.
