I had a hard time rating this book. On one hand, I thought it was wonderfully written and enjoyed the story. On the other, I struggled to get through it at times.
One of my biggest complaints with so many books is that characters feel underdeveloped and storylines feel rushed. Nothing could be further from the truth in this books. Verghese relishes every detail and you really know each and every character from the inside out. I loved that — so satisfying! That being said, the book felt a bit overly long. I definitely would have benefited from reading this book at a time in my life when I’d have longer stretches to devote to reading.
All in all, though, a great book of you don’t mind a lengthy read.
