The Pucking Coach's Daughter by S. Massery
1.0
Spice: 5/5
Plot: 1/5
Let me preface this review by saying that I have been a HUGE fan of Sara’s for a long time now and she was one of my most anticipated auto buy authors. Unfortunately after having read this book, I canceled my pre-order and will not auto buy anything from her anymore without attempting to read it first.
Now, I initially gave this book a 2/5 but I’m lowering it to a 1/5 because the more I think about it, the more appalled I am by the bullshit that was this book. So, buckle up cuz I’m about to rip this shit apart.
This was marketed as a dark, bully, why choose romance and yes that’s accurate. But to be even more accurate, this is just trigger p0rn. That’s it. That’s all. There’s no plot. There’s no point. It’s like Sara looked at a list of trigger warnings and said “fuck it, let’s just throw them all in there and hope no one notices how much of a dumpster fire this is.” Seriously though, what the actual fuck is with all of these dark romance authors writing absolute garbage all of a sudden?! Y’all are writing for shock value but shock value doesn’t automatically mean it’s a good.
So back to this book in particular. First of all, the word “pucking” is done and should immediately be removed from every book moving forward. Gross.
Now to the heavy shit… when you’re reading a dark romance there’s a specific trope called non con or non consent. In most books it’s actually consensual non consent that’s present, and yes there’s a big difference. I’m not going to get into the details of what makes it different here, but if you’re not sure, message me and we can talk about it. For me personally CNC is totally fine, and I can handle actual NC (r@p3 or SA) on page so long as it’s not the MMC committing the NC and the douchebag who does commit the assault gets what’s coming to him, (as in dead.) So basically I draw my line at actual r@p3 because that’s fucked up and I feel like that’s a pretty healthy boundary to have (as I’m sure most people do.)
So in this book we have 3 MMC’s and 1 FMC, it’s why choose after all. The FMC gets almost r@p3d by someone who’s wearing a bloody clown mask (again with the shock value, that’s the most cliche mask ever lol.) But then two of our MMC’s step in and stop the r@p3 from happening at the last second. These two MMC’s witness how deeply traumatic this incident was for our FMC. Fast forward and these same two MMC’s who are now in relationship with our girl decide it’s a good idea to punish her for something by dressing up in the same clown masks as her attempted r@p!st and chasing her through a dark arena. They then decide to play the consensual non consent game, BUT…. she cannot differentiate in any way between her guys and the r@p!st. And then, when she begs them to stop, they don’t… because the one guy doesn’t know her well enough to understand her and the other is too much of a fucking coward to help her so he just goes along with it. So now, we have actual on page r@p3 by an MMC. And let me be perfectly clear, it was not consensual non con. So this then sends our FMC into a serious spiral. As it should!!! To the point that she starts self harming and cutting herself. I’m ok with addressing self harm in a book as long as it’s not glorified or romanticized. It’s both of these things in this book and it’s fucked up. That’s not something that you should ever, EVER try to make light of.
So y’all wanna know what this MMC’s “punishment” was for actually r@p!ng her?? They tie him up and fuck with his head a little bit. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! That’s it. All is suddenly forgiven and it’s fine. Fuck no. FUCK. NO.
This is where I stopped reading and just skimmed. It was like 60% in maybe. Now I can’t say for sure whether the FMC actually went to therapy or addressed her self harm issues in a healthy way - all I know is that one of the three guys tried to help her with it - which isn’t good enough. There was talk of her going to therapy but I never saw any of it on page and I can skim pretty thoroughly. So basically nothing was resolved in a healthy manner and a lot of things that shouldn’t be romanticized were.
I won’t sit here and say that this is ok when it’s not, I’m not that person. If this is the kinda garbage you wanna read, go for it but I for one will not promote this shit on my page and I’ll call it out for what it is. You wanna unfollow me for this review, be my fucking guest. I will not falsely rate a book or praise an author when it’s not deserved.
This is glorified trigger p0rn for the sake of shock value and nothing more.
