CHARACTERS
CHAOL WESTFALL: chaol’s journey was so beautiful. i absolutely loved his character development. seeing him grow from resenting himself to someone who doesn’t feel the burden of what happened in his past anymore. as well as seeing him begin to love himself throughout the book.
YRENE TOWERS: one of my favourites. i loved seeing this character reappear from the novella. she is such an inspirational character who is filled with hope and light. i especially loved her dedication to healing and using what aelin taught her in the novella, holding onto the letter after all those years.
NERSYN: she is one of those characters that i liked but wasn’t someone i really cared about in the previous books. but i began to her character more whilst reading this book. i loved that she finds adventure and happiness. especially in a place where she feels truly accepted.
DISABILITY
i loved how Sarah J. Maas portrayed the disability aspect in this book. how you have to deal with emotional healing to begin with the physical healing. even when he began to progress with his spinal injury, the emotional pain was letting him down. furthermore, i loved how Sarah J. Maas didn’t make the recovery happen until the last quarter of the book. i felt like this made the healing process more realistic.
OTHER
HONOURABLE MENTIONS: dorian, aelin, rowan...how am i supposed to cope with this torture. i half expected one of these to appear in the book but i had to remind myself this is about chaol and they will be reunited in the seventh book.
DISLIKES: although i loved this book and is my favourite book i read this year, it still has a dislike. i found at times that it was slow and kind of dragging. some chapters were fillers and wasn’t really necessary to the story. furthermore, i thought the start was slow. i know it can’t be action packed from the beginning but it lacked something. but of course, considering this was originally meant to be a novella, i am amazed by how much detail was put into this novel and i still found myself wanting more.
the rest contains spoilers so if you haven’t read this book, i advise you not to read past this point.
THE SHIPS:
CHAOL&YRENE: okay so don’t get me started with these two. i was shipping them the moment they had their first argument. the only problem was i spoiled myself. all i wanted to know was whether the got together or not but to find out they’re married?! i was screaming. they are so cute together but they break my heart. if you didn’t cry when chaol stopped breathing and yrene made that deal to bring him back to life then you have no soul. the locket as well *sighs* why can’t Sarah J. Maas’ characters be real.
NERYSN&SARTAQ: what can i say? i ship it.
PLOT TWIST
MAEVE: okay, what? a valg queen? this plot twist though. i honestly didn’t expect this to happen. and now there is valg princes and princess? how is our beloved characters going to survive this. there is no way Sarah J. Maas will let any of our favourite characters survive.
