Satantango by László Krasznahorkai

5.0

absolutely un-fucking believable. maybe one of the best novels i’ve read in (five?!) years and i’ve been on a crazy streak this year. the characters are so haunting in their wretchedness and despondency that you can smell the palinka and sour mildew of rain soaked clothes through the pages. probably the best contemporary novel writing i’ve read since i started on murakami and kawakami, though both write in wildly different styles than the devastating realism intermingled with prophecy in satantango. i love it when a novel is so profoundly unsettling it leaves the hair on the back of your neck raised.
