They Thirst
by Robert R. McCammon
3.5 stars
Vampires are taking over the city of Los Angeles and the story follows several characters as this plays out. We have a middle-aged detective who is trying to catch a serial killer, a journalist who works for a gossip newspaper, a millionaire, a drug dealer, a comedian, and a priest, amongst others.
This started off a lot stronger for me than how it ended up overall. Right at the beginning there is a scene that takes place in Hungary which was very atmospheric and had some excellent gruesome details. Then we move on to present day Los Angeles and we're introduced to a biker character, Kobra, and some fun action-packed scenes ensue. After that we are slowly introduced to the other characters and I did think they were well written and quite interesting. One of my problems with the book, and probably the biggest detractor of my enjoyment of the book, was that there are some things that play out that were way too convenient and felt forced so I struggled to suspend my disbelief. It comes across as quite a serious book but some of the things that happen are quite silly and the two didn't work well together. There were elements I really liked about this book but unfortunately it felt like the overall story was less than the sum of its parts.
