Holy Ghost by John Sandford
3.0

Virgil goes to a small town to investigate some shootings at a church where visions of Mary have been recorded and things start to get complicated. This one doesn't feel quite so formulaic as others in the series which is a good thing but it takes a long time to get off the starting blocks and get interesting. It feels like a genuine mystery, but one where the author is having a little too much fun with the characters to worry about keeping the story on the straight and narrow. As with other novels in this series, the MacGuffin - the visions - is dealt with briefly and really only features as backdrop to the real action, which this story has in spades. Fun but not gripping.
