Joseph King, a childhood friend of Kate's convicted of murdering his wife, escapes from prison, takes his children hostage and demands that Kate re-open his case.

The Kate Burkholder series is one of my favorites. Unfortunately, this installment does not live up to expectations as the pacing is slow and the plot drawn out with several unnecessary flashbacks to Kate and Joseph's past.

While some of the twists and turns are captivating, Joseph is a very unlikable character and it is difficult to care about his predicament. Thus, when the inevitable happens, it has less of an emotional impact on the reader.

The mystery is interesting if predictable, but Kate and John's relationship manages to compensate - that man is a saint!

Kathleen McInerney's audiobook narration is superb as always.
