Red Notice: A True Story of High Finance, Murder, and One Man's Fight for Justice by Bill Browder

4.0

Engaging and surprisingly important, Bill Browder’s personal account of the corruption running through the Russian finance section and government is starting and scary. Giving context with his unusual and high-achieving family, the reader understands quickly why Browder is so successful, and why that leads to some very dangerous places. Written in quick prose, Browder gives just enough detail to keep the reader engaged in a culture perhaps not like their own but with enough context and flair to feel like you’re there with him. Though some names are changed for protection purposes (and yes, they do need it), there is a startling amount of real information, making what could be a fictional spy and finance thriller all the more unsettling. Even if you are not interested in the world of international finance, Red Notice, at its end, becomes an important text on human rights issues and the need for transparency and security. Give it a read.
