I don't believe I've ever read a book like this. The genre itself is almost a character, morphing from historical fiction to fantasy to horror. It's an apocalyptic road tale set in 1300s France during the plague. Life is bleak and vile in every way when a knight, a priest, and a young girl begin travelling together. They encounter murderers, fantastical creatures, and spiritual warfare as the girl leads them on a mission to hell and back (literally).
This is definitely not a book I can recommend to everyone due to the graphic violence and horror, but if you love reading about this period in history and can stomach some horror, it's an unforgettable experience.
