Betty by Tiffany McDaniel
4.0

To be honest, when I sat down to gather my thoughts on Betty, I couldn't find words. I was consumed by the sadness of this book that I didn't know how to put in words. It was not an easy read. Many a times in the beginning I kept it aside unable to bring myself to continue and I was drawn right back to it.

Betty is a family saga of the Carpenters' set in the Appalachian landscape, of the unthinkable racism, generations of abuse and the trauma that follows. It has the mystical nature and the Cherokee life infused into it. It has children growing up under the shades of both light and darkness. At one moment dancing under the moonlight, running wild through the woods, chasing butterflies and in the next, drowning in the sand pit of unimaginable sorrow. It is a reminder of the pain we are capable of inflicting each other, of the life that still manages to sprout, of the stories we tell ourselves to survive. This is the story of Betty, beautiful and devastating. This is the story of light finding its way through a dark tunnel.
