The Buried Giant
by Kazuo Ishiguro
Sadly, this was not my favorite. If you're an Ishiguro fan you should still read it, but if you're new you should start with Never Let Me Go or Remains of the Day. The story follows an elderly couple in medieval England as they journey through their country in search of their son. They compete with a magical, memory-erasing fog, and wander in fear of a dragon that haunts their part of the world. I KNOW. It sounds like there should be lots of action and fun, but it is slow-moving, and not in the good, butler kind of way. Ishiguro adopted a more era-appropriate writing style that got in my way more than anything. The ending still brought me to tears, and hit me with a kind of sadness, but it just wasn't my cup of tea.
