I was really hoping to like this book more than I did but I had some trouble with its tone. I couldn’t tell if it was supposed be a rom-com, a spicy why-choose, or a mysterious fantasy. I guess it was supposed to be a mix of the three but it suffered for it
I found the suspense was fairly predictable and that plots that could have been more exciting got rushed in order to fit in another steamy scene
I also struggled with the dialogue, which seemed a bit juvenile to me. We have 30 year old males saying “shit sticks” and a 27 year old female calling something the “the bomb” unironically. Then there were lines like “she couldn’t sugar coat something if she was holding a 5-pound bag of sugar”. I found myself cringing a lot
That said, I did enjoy the characters and their dynamics, especially with the M/M pairings and the different personalities. I think this book could have worked better if it were longer and was a standalone with a full mystery rather than a series.
Unfortunately I’m not intrigued enough to continue with the series
