The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls
by Anissa Gray
Gray did a wonderful job of engaging you in the story. The beginning was filled with mystery as you learned why Althea and Proctor in jail, why Kim was so angry, and how each person played into the larger picture. That veil slowly parted and keeps you invested in learning more.
The story was more about the family’s past than the current situation. It was interesting to watch Gray pull out strands of each story and show how people are shaped by their circumstances and even more by the reactions of others to circumstance.
Probably my favorite part is that this isn’t a story where things end up in rainbows and hearts. Some things are broken and some repaired. Many things are tenuous and still being dealt with. The characters aren’t wrapped up in a nice little bow with a perfect life. Is it possible that things could be more tragic and painful, absolutely. The story doesn’t end though and the author is clear about that.
