Bright Red Fruit
by Safia Elhillo
Samira is a young poet who lives under the strict rules of her Sudanese mother who unfortunately believes all the community rumors about her daughter. After being grounded, Samira discovers an older attractive male poet named Horus on a poetry forum and they start up a forbidden romance. However, he is nothing but trouble. The entire book is told in prose and is a metaphor for the story of Persphone and the forbidden fruit. This was the perfect book to read for Arab American Heritage and National Poetry Month. I think it might also be loosely based on the own author's experiences of being taken advantage of and her childhood in DC. The book often made me lose my breath in fear for the young girl as she was caught in the clutches of a manipulative abusive older man.
