Noughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman

4.5 stars.
I found this a really enjoyable read and the plot is fast enough to hook young adults as well as adults. I read this as a teen in school, this is my second read in my 20s. This book, although it had some questionable plot points later, it had a long-term impact on me. It impacted on my perspective of racism, perspective of the world in general and my mind comes back to this book sometimes when I watch the news or am doing something out in the community.

The worldbuilding in the book does suffer through the plot being through the lenses of two teenagers, however the author still does make a good enough job to develop the world well-enough for it to be believable and immersive.

I appreciate why (for the later part of the book) people have big issues with the characters and overall plot.
SpoilerI did not like the romanticising of the kidnapping and did Sephy truly have consent for sex in that situation when she’s the hostage and he’s the kidnapper? Food for thought. I for one found that quite a dangerous message to send out to young adults.

But, the rest of the book made up for that part and as the novel has inspired theatre and television adaptions, I would recommend others to read it.
