Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber

5.0

I could NOT put this down!!

This book is so magical, whimsical, dreamy, adventurous, romantic, and fun! I loved the world building of the North and all of the curious places Evangeline visited; I loved the way everything in this book felt magical and lovely with a tinge of danger or foreboding — just like a fairy tale; I loved the complexity of Jacks; and I LOVED the mystery! I was constantly wanting to know what would happen or who we would meet next!

I completely forgot how much I enjoyed Stephanie Garber’s writing style because it’s been almost a year since I read Caraval, but oh my god it is so lovely!! Her use of imagery and colour is amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever read another author who manages to describe things so vividly through unique and creative metaphors without coming across too flowery or inaccessible. For example, she describes someone’s dress as a “frothy pink sugar gown” and wintry trees touched by sunlight as being “fairy green” and “blue gold”. I can’t even pinpoint why these descriptions work so well for me, but they do, and I love it!

I need to finish the Caraval series before the end of the year, and I am anxiously awaiting the next book in this series!!
