this was SO lovely!!! queer friendships, coming of age, fandom culture, chinese heritage, older queers, and just an entire tapestry of queer people with different background and gender expression... my heart is very soft after reading this!!
I'm not a big fan of romance books and I feel like I'm outgrowing the YA genre a bit BUT I like to read queer romance YA from time to time to get some wholesome queer content. Usually I just find them cute and entertaining, but I truly loved If You Still Recognize Me.
I think its main strength is that the romance is not at the center of the plot: many things are happening, several storylines with different characters and their relationships unfolding. I got caught into the story easily and read the book in three days.
The weaker part of the book is sadly the dialogue; they felt a bit stiff and sometimes unnatural, especially when between teenagers supposedly best friends.
But overall as a former tumblr girl, this book made me feel very seen which, as we discover following Elsie's adventures, is such a precious feeling. More contemporary YA like this one, please!!!!
