The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami

5.0

I had no idea what to expect reading this, I had only heard that Murakami was an amazing author and his stories could be creepy and disturbing. So naturally I was interested.

Toru Okada is a simple man living in Japan with his wife Kumiko, their lives seem mundane until one day their cat disappears. Then his wife never comes home from work. This sets into motion a chain of events, which involves: psychic sisters, an abandoned well, old WWII soldiers, a strange teenage girl, his unsettling politician half-brother.

I have a hard time describing the story, but as it unfolds it gets stranger and darker. There is a strong emphasis on spirits and psychics, which isn't really done in a way which American readers would be accustomed to.
