A Mind of Her Own by Paula McLain

In many ways it reminds me of a Jane Austen novel, where a seemingly headstrong woman who didn't want a man, because she had different visions for herself, would find a way to "have it all" by the end and live happily ever after. This book turned it up a notch where it transposed modern white feminist ideals unto a 20th century woman in the form of historical fiction. I do love the romance story and thought it was really cute, and the nerdy puns about feeling symmetrical lol. I was just woefully disappointed with Marie's character, everyone else was more interesting than she was.
This may sound like a harsh, but I just wished a more critical eye was given to writing these stories that try to re-imagine what our 'heros' look like. I doubt Marie spent ALL her time thinking about men vs women in Science, being the first this and the first that. Write women and heros who are dynamic, have depth, and a wide range of interests outside of what they're known for. This is historical FICTION after all.
