La Bête humaine by Émile Zola
3.0

So... this was good. Really, really weird and pulpy, mixed with in with some good old Zola "science-dictates-that-you-must-be-miserable" theory.

It's difficult to discuss the book without spoilers, but suffice to say that there are, what, twenty characters, and let's say about 18 of them die, almost die, plot murder, attempt murder, or successfully pull off a murder. Seriously, these people all need help. Especially Séverine. Someone help her.

Would I recommend reading this? It's an interesting precursor to the noir detective story, although there isn't much of a mystery. It's also pretty good at developing characters (*cough*Séverine*cough*) while also portraying how others characters see them.

I do recommend this, but it comes with trigger warnings. This is Zola, after all, what were you expecting.
