When the Sea Turned to Silver
by Grace Lin
Similar in style to her earlier books--I suppose they form a trilogy?--Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and Starry River of the Sky, the story of two Chinese children is interwoven with fairytales told by one of the kids, PinMei, or by her grandmother, Amah, The Storyteller. And eventually the kids meet characters from those fairytales in an exciting adventure, as they journey to find a "luminous stone" that they hope will convince the nasty Emperor to release Amah from custody. Nice story and interesting setting, especially the time period of the Great Wall being under construction. Fun surprises in store, too. Sadly because I listened to it on audio, I didn't get to see the illustrations, so I'll be checking out the print version soon to see what I missed.
