Flame in the Mist by Renée Ahdieh
4.0

I think there's something to be said about a book that begins at such a slow pace, that you deliberate multiple times whether to put it down, but manages to end up accelerating so rapidly towards the middle that by the time you're done, its a roller-coaster feeling of "what just happened?"

I love Ahdieh and her duology-the wrath and the dawn- is one of my favourite reads this year. While this book has an entirely different premise, its fresh and exciting, hopeful and endearing as a light read that is both enjoyable and also doesn't really require too much energy expended in angst/worry/suspense.

Mariko is unconventional in all the best ways, and is probably the funniest character, in an unexpected, not-taking-herself-too-seriously kind of way. But its her determination, and resilience that really makes her a great protagonist. Probably the most difficult parts to follow along, are the emperor/empress/prince story lines, and I never know really whose evil, and who isn't. But, I think those are seeds that will be reaped in the next book (hopefully).

All in all, loved it!
