Aw gosh, I love a good travel memoir, and this one is full of "firsts" that have that special intensity of early teen experiences. Dan Santat is obviously a talented artist (colorist is Abe Erskine, and the color moods are spot-on), and adults of a certain age will enjoy this look back at a time before internet, cell phones, and GPS (it was the summer of 1989). Kids, especially those in middle school, will identify with the social experiences. Don't miss the back matter for notes and actual trip photos.

"I didn't know I'd feel this way about things I'd only seen on postcards, in textbooks, and in movies."

"There's a whole world outside of my small town, and I'm lucky to see it!"

"Seeing the world as a bigger place made it feel much friendlier."
