The Forgotten Girl
by India Hill Brown
This was a perfect starter for my scary story reading month - it's a juvenile fic, so starting a bit mild for an adult reader. One of the things I loved the most in this is how easy it was to relate to Iris - I'm also an older sister who often felt like my younger siblings got all of the attention. I also loved the reality of the story - the small microaggressions, the reality of family and grief, the realness and closeness of racism in the U.S.
While I loved the story, I disliked the roles of Iris and David and how it felt that Iris had to be saved by David. That's being a bit hypercritical with this story; I plan on recommending a lot for young readers who are wanting a spooky story for Halloween.
