Another incredible addition to the saga. The characters get even more depth and complexity, the shades of grey get even less clear cut, all through an exciting adventure.
I love how this book explores how, in a war (or disagreement), both sides view themselves as righteous. The characters come to realize things are not as black and white as they thought, and they struggle with that, have a hard time standing up to authority even when they aren't sure it is right, and face consequences for challenging the status quo when they choose to do so. It is an authentic and important portrayal of standing up to power.
The romance in these books is sweet and perfect for tweens. Lots of awkwardness and blushing and a recognition that real caring underlies it. I appreciate it not trying to turn kids into adults.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as did all of my children ages 7-12.
