Jack of Shadows
by Roger Zelazny
My second Zelazny. Not up to the scratch of Lord Of Light, but as a shorter science fantasy piece, very enjoyable.
A world half in shadow and magic, and half in the light and science sounds like a particularly dramatic description of 19th century folk tales... But in this case it's a literal, physical world, tidally locked with a half where science and physics governs the world, and a half where science fails and magic rules.
A good short story, well told, with themes of personal revenge against the world, by a man whom others use up or kill to their own ends, knowing he will be reborn in the shadowy magic lands.
