I had stopped reading a lot of YA fantasy romance because they were all starting to read the same. This is a nice departure from the status quo. There is still a love angle and the tough but doesn’t understand why dudes like her female lead, but there was enough of our heroine working to better herself and self awareness of her strengths and flaws that I was fine with that element. The Chinese folklore and mythology give this story an element of ethereal fantasy that my interest was always piqued and just needed to find what happened next a lot.
And I also said “BITCH!” And “Girl what?!” A lot so that’s fun.
Only niggle was the pacing in the first two chapters, but I’m glad I stuck it out because it takes off right at chapter three.
