The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie
3.0

Enjoyed the mystery and can't say I saw the ending coming. The narrator made it difficult to understand Poirot, but maybe that was a good thing because oftentimes when I could understand him I wanted to smack him. He often comes off as belittling and over-confident. Poor Hastings...Poirot treats him like a 5 year old. I'm not sure we actually got all the details to work it out on our own before Poirot revealed various details. That's one of my problems with a lot of detective novels. The detective is this brilliant problem solver because they have about 10x more clues than everyone else (it's one of the things I like about JK Rowling...even if it's in passing there are clues that the reader just passes over)

****SPOILER ALERT****
Hastings is visiting his friend John Cavendish. While there his newly remarried septuagenarian (weirdly the show I'm watching just said this word too...coincidence?!?) step-mother winds up dead due to poisoning. He brings in Poirot to help solve the case. At first her new husband, Alfred, is the main suspect but Poirot prevents his arrest by providing an alibi. Soon suspicion falls on everyone from her two step-sons to the well known poison doctor in town. In the end, it turns out it was Alfred in cahoots with Mrs. Howard (help in the house) and they used some clever chemistry to poison Mrs. Inglethorp with her own medicine...Poirot just didn't want to have Alfred tried until he had "smoking gun" evidence due to the whole double jeopardy thing.

Good read. I'll definitely read some other of Christie's works. Not a must read in my opinion but a nice, easy, entertaining read!
