Shutter by Courtney Alameda

Again another book club selection by my students. The cover and the plot sounded interesting. A young girl fights ghosts/spirits with the use of a camera by capturing their spiritual energy on film. What follows is quite a jumble of technical terms only those familiar with fighting spirits and knowing all the different types of entities of the "other world". I will give Almeda credit for the fact that she did an incredible job with imagery to the point that her descriptions were grotesque and horrifying. The descriptions were nightmarish and perhaps a little too severe for a young adult novel; eyes being gorged out, limbs being torn off, heads ripped open. In the end, I found the book to be boring at times and felt a romance was added to make the story appealing to those individuals who need a love story in their young adult novels.
