A Shadow Crown by Melissa Blair

5.0

"A Shadow Crown" by Melissa Blair exceeded my expectations, especially after reading "A Broken Blade." Unlike many other sequels, this book did not disappoint me.

In this book, Keera's character undergoes a significant change, becoming more humane and finding a sense of belonging with her "found family." Relationships are the central theme of this story, and the support of her tribe adds emotional depth to the challenging journey of freeing the halflings.

The Anishinabe traditions woven into the narrative intrigued me the most. I wish I had known more about these traditions, as they would have enhanced my reading experience.

I am so impressed with this series; if it weren't for the intimate love scenes, I would be compelled to create a novel study unit around it for my grade 7/8 classes. The representation of FNMI and queer characters in this series is fantastic. I highly recommend this book and its prequel, "A Broken Blade." I cannot wait to read β€œA Vicious Game,” the next in the series, and I have preordered β€œAn Honored Vow,” which will be published in early 2025.
