This book was much more chill than the previous three. Which isn't to say that it doesn't offer some great scenes, character moments, or interesting scenarios, but it just wasn't as intense as the others. This one focused more on the burden of leadership and the ethical questions of morphing. I liked that route and I think it would be a great thing to bring up in book clubs.

I can see why Ax is another favorite character in this series. To paraphrase that very popular line from Brooklyn 99: I've only known Ax for an hour but if anything happens to him, I'll kill everyone in this room and then myself. Seriously, I love him so much. Our first introduction to the Andolites was his older brother, who came off as this wise but dying mentor. Ax has a certain dignity to him but he is more inexperienced and even though his speech pattern sounds mature, he comes off as much of a kid as the main five. Which I really love for an alien character.

Hard to think of what else to say here. It was just a delightful book with the usual insights into what it feels like to morph into various animals, a bit of danger and adventure, a bit of blooming romance. The more chill feeling of this one was most appreciated after the very tense and dark first three books.
