Obsession
by Jennifer L. Armentrout
More and more, I am realizing just how great Jennifer Armentrout is. Companion books are such an odd thing though… This is definitely in the same universe as Obsidian, et al. (We actually see Daemon for a second and there is a reference to what Origin means) but it is a totally different kind of book. It has more of an adult flair and I would classify it as New Adult rather than YA. Part of me is so used to the YA sanitization of language and physicality that it was a little jarring to read the word “motherfucker" and stuff like “if so and so happens, I will lose my shit".
Obsession is told in alternating viewpoints from a 23 year old human female, Serena, and a 31 year old Arum male, Hunter. And man are there some sexytimes! Well written sexytimes, too! I don’t think I’d ever actually seen that before. In this book the Luxen are bad, the humans are mostly dumb for thinking they can control them, and the Arum are… Complicated? They have way more dimensions than we seen the the Lux series. They are definitely predators, but can you blame a lion for eating a gazelle? And some are bad, some just want to live their lives and forget about the war with the Luxen that has been raging for generations. Since all we knew about the Arum going into this was from Daemon and Katy’s perspectives, I wasn’t sure how an Arum book would play out. Characters have biases though and it was good to see the “bad guys’" point of view.
I have a strong feeling we are going to see some Arum/Luxen team ups in the forthcoming Lux novels. Serena and Hunter’s part in all of this doesn’t quite resolve, so I would be pretty surprised if we don’t see then again.
