Man, Fuck This House
by Brian Asman
I think the best part of this book is it’s subversion of expectations, but other than that I found it just…odd.
The characters were pretty typical for the premise - a family with some strained relationships, but I felt like the author relied so heavily on stereotypes here that I was a bit bored in the beginning. And the stakes are so much lower for the reader if we’re not invested in these characters.
The writing style also threw me off a bit. It was as if he was trying to put jump cuts into the novel the way it changed point of views throughout scenes. While jump cuts are effective in films, I find them jarring in prose, and I lost track of people too much, especially once the house itself got a POV section. The climax was so jumbled, eventually I was just skimming it to get to the end.
I did think the way the house coming alive was an interesting twist, but I was really hoping for more of a ghost story. It was unique, and the last thing I expected from this book, so I give kudos for that. It was compelling enough for me to get to the end.
