Chlorine by Jade Song

dark fast-paced

4.75

I really loved this. chlorine toes the line between surrealism and psychosis brilliantly. I have always loved mermaids, especially when these creatures exist in horror. this is such an interesting take on both concepts and I’m obsessed with it.

obsession, and the many forms it takes, is wonderfully written. I did predict the reveal which is no fault of the author and her writing - I just thought that it would be the craziest outcome. usually my thought processes and initial theories exist on the side of absurdity but I am SO glad song and I are operating on the same level of unhinged.

the unexpected romantic subplot was really well done. it’s uncomfortable and weird at times, but so raw and beautiful.

would highly recommend to anyone who likes han kang’s the vegetarian (and her short story the fruit of my woman) and darren aronofsky’s black swan.
